2050 Carbon Pathways Calculator – Home

Welcome to the 2050 Carbon Pathways Calculator for SA pilot project

The 2050 Calculator is designed for use without instruction – to be explored directly, with pop-ups appearing as the cursor touches elements of the interface, explaining the levers and expanding details in the outputs that are graphically displayed. You are encouraged to test the Calculator out, click on a few of the levers and see what happens.

As part of Project 90 by 2030’s piloting project we have developed a short introductory guide, as the initial experience may be bewildering for those not well accustomed to experimenting with the variables of energy planning or projections of greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation potential. The Guide introduces the key features and provides a brief description of how the tool works. Information about the input data and assumptions and other contextual issues is provided within the Frequently Asked Questions section, which also explains where key data and references can be found within the Excel version available for download.

A summary overview of the purpose and intent of the tool, its main features and how it relates to on-going policy implementation processes, is provided in the Brochure – designed for use in hard copy (8 pages in A4) and available for download.

An audio-visual presentation of the South African context is available.

This interactive tool has been developed for the DEA by the Energy Research Centre at UCT, based on a prototype developed for the UK by their Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), which is undertaking an international project to roll out application of the Tool. South Africa, India, China and South Korea have published national versions of the tool, while Brazil and Indonesia have initiated such projects. A Global 2050 Pathway Calculator was launched in January 2015. South Africa’s 2050 Pathway Calculator is not a planning tool, but rather a device for exploring some of the variables under consideration in our national energy and development planning, and the long term dynamics of implementing a transformational climate change response.

This piloting project is funded through the British High Commission in Pretoria, from the UK Prosperity Fund, and undertaken with the support of the Department of Environmental Affairs.

The various sections on this website provides overviews to: the South African general context, associated policies, guide to how to use the 2050 Calculator, access to the calculator and how to share exemplar pathways. We also encourage dialogue, thus we have incorporated a comments section for users and a subscription option for users to follow updates to the website. We would like to hear about your experience of using the 2050 Calculator and any comments on or thoughts provoked by the Exemplar Pathways that have been submitted by other users.
